need a letter of recommendation?

If you are considering asking me to write a letter of recommendation for you, please realize that I can only write a substantive letter of support if I know you. Just earning a good grade in the class is not enough for me to be able to provide you with a substantive letter; ideally, I should know something about you, so it is in your best interest to make yourself known to me throughout the term. Visit me during office hours if you have questions about the course material, or want to discuss how/where you see it connect to other courses or life experience of yours, actively participate in class, and ask questions in and out of class if you have any. You should positively set yourself apart from your classmates. If you don't do these things, there isn't much that I can write about beyond your letter grade, and I will be unable to provide a letter solely for that.

Before requesting a Letter of Recommendation you should also ask yourself whether my interactions with you would allow me to evaluate you on the following factors:

  • Leadership and Classroom Social Skills

  • Intellectual Ability

  • Writing Ability

  • Imagination And Creativity

  • Your Final Project/Essay

  • Quality Of Work

  • Work Ethic

  • Suitability For Jobs, Graduate School, or other Opportunities

  • Promise as a Professional in your Field

Admission committees generally ask faculty to evaluate student on a plethora of factors that give them an idea of who you are and where your strengths lie (which is why I ask you to consider my ability to do so above). If I cannot give these committees my honest evaluation regarding these factors, consider requesting a letter from an instructor who knows you and your work well enough to do so.

If after considering the above, you still would like for me to write a letter for you, you must request it at least TWO MONTHS before the deadline. Additionally, you must provide the following stated in the request:

  • Which term you took my course(s) in, and which course(s) you completed

    • [example: HIST 109 in Spring 2017 or DOC 100d in Winter 2018]

  • Whether this is a General Letter, or Specific to an Admission (see below)

  • Application/Letter Deadlines.

  • Scholarship/Job/Graduate school to which you are applying.

  • Website/info about the opportunity/job/academic program.

  • Instructions on how/where to send the recommendation letter

  • C.V./Resume and/or Personal Statement

I regret that I may be unable to complete multiple letters for students who request them for different opportunities. I will give you a signed general letter via PDF file so that you may reuse as needed, unless you ask that it be specified to a particular admission or opportunity. Please let me know if this should be on school letterhead.
